SERGEANT MISER SHOWED up at my house in a big pickup truck, which was no surprise. Those were the only vehicles that would be on the roads today until they were completely plowed.

He was a short man, and serious—not at all like the goofy Deputy Doug Douglas we’d come to know. But Pine Grove was too small for its own police department. So unlike the larger nearby Squirrel River which shared Mistletoe County, and had their own cops too, we relied upon the Mistletoe County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement.

And that meant dealing with this guy. He wasn’t my favorite man around town, but I planned to tolerate him. If it meant getting the dead body out of my upstairs bedroom, then so be it. At least he was here to help.

Or so I thought. “I’m here to end whatever ideas you might have about investigating this case yourself.” Sergeant Miser was looking straight at me when he spoke, and his gaze didn’t waver.

Neither did his tone. “You have a reputation for sticking your nose out where it shouldn’t be. And I’m warning you, there are repercussions for interfering around here now that I’m in town.”

He said it like I was a naughty bloodhound, sniffing out clues that were none of my business. Well, I had news for him. It was nothing like that. I was more like a wily cat, who used their senses to get out of an unpleasant situation once dropped into one. But in my opinion, I’d already landed on my feet this time. I had this new sheriff to do the work for me.

I let him know he’d already won. “I have no intention of solving this one for you, Sheriff. I would appreciate it very much in fact if you would do that job yourself. I have other fish to fry.”

I did, too. I had guests to take care of, and a shop to shovel out. I had to at least make it to the door to hang up a CLOSED sign.

And Joann was a wreck. And who could blame her? There were more important things going on. While I didn’t see the need to snoop into this mystery myself, I intended to help her, and the others, get through this. Losing someone so suddenly could be hard, especially under violent circumstances.

The sheriff had little time for standing around my kitchen. “I’m going up to look at the scene and get some photographs. Then I’ll be back down to talk to each of you in turn. I’ll expect you’ll be ready.”

What did that mean? No one was going anywhere. Until Joe came over with the plow on his truck later, we were more stuck here today than ever. Where was Joe, anyway? When I checked the time on the stove, I saw it was nearly ten o’clock already. He’d said he would open his deli at four and be over here a couple hours after that. But there was still no sign of him, and no missed message on my phone either.
